The biggest game of the year: FC Barcelona vs. Manchester United at Wembley! Normally, I'm not very excited for soccer matches, but this was the big Champions League title, so of course I had to participate in the fun with everyone else. One of my hall mates reserved a table at a sports bar nearby so we could get there close to when the game started and not have to worry about finding seats. Ironically, the sports bar (less than 2 blocks away from my residence) is an American-themed sports bar. Note the Wrigley Field sign in the background:
This is the second time I've been there to watch a game and maybe the 4th or 5th Barça match I've ever seen. (Oh what a fan I am!) Although living in Barcelona has sure taught me who the key players are. Lionel Messi, the forward from Argentina, is known for his quick footwork in the places near the goal where it's needed the most. And his skill payed off--he was awarded MVP of the game! And Barcelona won easily 3-1. This is FC Barcelona's 4th consecutive champions title-- wow, what a great team! And what crazy fans!!! In between eating some patatas bravas, I took videos of the fans' reactions in the sports bar after Barça's 2nd and 3rd goals.
I'm sure that Las Ramblas were flooded with people (mostly drunk, perhaps) in blue and red shirts last night. Back at the sports bar, before the match, we filled out a sheet with our predictions for the game and we won against all the other tables! We predicted no overtime, no red cards, Barça winning 3-1 with Messi for 2 goals, Iniesta for 1, and Rooney (from Manchester United) for 1. 2/4 scorers correct-- not bad! So our table won a bottle of Tequila, haha. No, I didn't drink any.
Here's a link to a NY Times article if you're interested in reading about the specifics of the game. Okay, that's all for now... back to laundry and studying for final exams!
This brings back my fun days working for the L.A. Aztecs Soccer Team who played at the Rose Bowl. We had one of the biggest players ever in soccer, George Best. He was from England and has since passed away. He drank a lot. It was fun times in the soccer world and, being in Europe, it's like being around the Super Bowl here.
